Robert James Hebden (Heb) memorial bursary art exhibition

On Tuesday 3 May Eddie Koiki Mabo Library was privileged to host the Robert James Hebden (Heb) Memorial Bursary Art Exhibition. Dr Jocene Vallack’s ED3194 (Arts Education for Primary School) students proudly exhibited their visual arts folios. The artwork was of a very high standard and garnered a lot of attention during the day from Library visitors. The exhibition launch and prize-giving ceremony was well attended, with three talented students sharing the Heb Memorial Bursary prize.

Robert James Hebden (Heb) was a popular Townsville cartoonist. He published several books of cartoons, and for over 40 years contributed a weekly topical cartoon to local newspapers. Heb was also a talented musician (drums and guitar) playing for several local bands including the Pacific Mainstream Jazz Band. However, his primary love was painting. Heb submitted two entries in the Archibald Prize, and would have loved the enthusiasm of the ED3194 students. Heb was a significant Townsvillian, and you can find out more about him and his art at the Heb: A Retrospective exhibition being held at Pinnacles Gallery - part of this year's T150 celebrations.
