NAIDOC week 2014 congratulations

NAIDOC week for 2014 ran from 6-13 July.  This year we congratulate JCU Alumni Professor Gracelyn Smallwood.

Professor Smallwood was named NAIDOC Person of the Year (check out this great photo on the awards Facebook page). She is a Townsville local and has had a long involvement in nursing and health as well as Indigenous issues and a similar long association with JCU. On top of her academic and activism work, Professor Smallwood is also a link to one of the traditional owner groups in the Townsville area the Bindal people. JCU students and staff may know her from lectures and welcome to country speeches.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

JCU will hold NAIDOC celebrations  in September to allow for events to occur when students and staff are in normal semester hours.

The library holds multiple titles around Indigenous Australian topics and one great database for searching for articles is Informit as it contains Australian topics obviously related to Australian Indigenous issues.
